Some Rare Footage of Alex Stivrins

Wanted to post something with Alex Stivrins (or Aleksis Stivriņš) in action. He is one of the two players of Latvian descent to make their NBA debut in the 1980’s (Leo Rautins was the other one, however, he gravitated more towards his Lithuanian roots).

Son of Kazimirs Stivrins, who emigrated from Latvia during World War 2, Alex made a point to visit Latvia after we regained independence from the USSR rule and was kind enough to tell me about his life a few years ago in an interview for Sporta Avize.

This video contains buckets from his 1992-93 stint with the Atlanta Hawks, the January 14 game against the Detroit Pistons and the January 20 game at the Boston Garden against the Celtics. It was an NBA comeback season for Stivrins after making his NBA debut in 1985 for the Seattle SuperSonics and having 20-point per game seasons in Italy and Spain.
